AlterMundi is taking part in the WBMv6

Thanks to the collaboration of various related organizations, we managed to raise the necessary funds for Nico and Gui to travel to Aalborg, Denmark and participate in the Wireless Battle of the Mesh v6. This would have been impossible without the kickstarting offering of Simon Wunderlich and Saverio Proto, the generous help of Al Cano Santana, and the inconditional support of Ramón Roca and Roger Baig Viñas. This combined effort not only allows us to travel and stay in Denmark; […]

AlterMundi endorses the Battle of the Mesh v6

The Wireless Battle of the Mesh is an event that aims to bring together people from across the globe to test the performance of different routing protocols for ad-hoc networks, like Babel, B.A.T.M.A.N., BMX, OLSR, and 802.11s. Of course, new protocols (working on OpenWRT) are always welcome! This year the event will take place from Monday 15th till Sunday 21st of April at the University of Aalborg, Denmark. AlterMundi endorses and supports the Battle of the Mesh v6 because of […]

DIY PoE-enabled 100mbit router

Most CPEs and outdoor equipment support PoE out-of-the-box, and come with a PoE injector so that you can run a long length of UTP between the power source and the equipment.
Most SOHO routers don’t come with this feature, but with a few tools, minimal soldering skills, and 10 spare minutes, you can pull out this hack and obtain more flexibility than most CPE solutions offer.

DIY PoE-enabled gigabit router

Doing _Power-over-Ethernet_ on a Gigabit port might seem challenging at first sight: since all 4 pairs of UTP are used as data lines, there are no «spare» pairs to use exclusively for sending DC current, as in 100mbit ethernet cables.
However, it’s possible to inject (and extract) DC voltage _on the data pairs_, using *center-tapped transformers*, preserving the signal transmission intact and the gigabit speeds of the port.

batman-adv: ap mode with isolation enabled

In our test networks, we are using dual radio nodes built from cheap routers plus wifi dongles. The problem is that there are currently (as of October 2012) no wifi usb drivers that work perfectly in adhoc mode, so we must fall back to using both adhoc, and infrastructure links – adhoc is working fine in router builtin radio (ath9k) and infrastructure (AP-client) saves the day with the dongles (ath9k_htc). Normal infrastructure mode puts clients into the same link-local, the […]
